Online Advertising Made Almost Too Easy 25 May 2010

The continual conundrum of the online world is how to make money. Innovative and brilliant websites struggle mightily to establish fiscal success. Increasingly advertising is the angle companies are embracing to generate revenue, whether YouTube or the hyperlocal blog.

Of course, actually getting the advertising is the difficult part of this equation.

Some employ a sales staff, while others sign up with Google and other ad networks. And there are varying opinions about how to structure the advertising element of a website. Many embrace the pay per click approach, where a site gets paid based on how many people actually go to an advertiser’s website. Others, though, treat their web properties like a print publication; they offer a specified and desired audience, and charge a set amount for the opportunity to reach those readers.

But let’s not overlook an important component of this relationship: the advertiser. While we’re in a world inundated with marketing messages, the fact remains that there are myriad businesses and organizations wanting to move online, but don’t really know how to do so. There are sales reps and online services to help them, but it can still be intimidating.

And into this breach stands a pretty amazing bit of technology. A company named PaperG has software that automatically creates display advertising for small businesses based on some simple text entries. Type in the name of the business, city, other relative information and the software will search the web to find photos, references, reviews and other pertinent information. And then an ad will be automatically created to the size specifications, incorporating the related elements.

This begs the question, what is the quality of these generated ads? Well, as it turns out this software is actually making ad sales rep’s jobs easier. Rather than selling a business on the merits of the website, the rep is utilizing this tool to have a proposed ad already created when reaching out to a prospective advertiser.

As far as I’m concerned, that’s a plugin that any website or blog could use. One that helps sell and create ads. These services will become more common going forward, and thus it’s pretty crucial to consider ad size and location while setting up a site.
